  1. Football's Ligue 1 and rugby's Top 14 competitions have been closed early after the Govermnment in France banned all sporting events, including behind closed doors, until September.

    French football's governing body had hoped to resume the season in June and finish the campaign a month later, while the rugby authporitioes had hoped to finish in August.

    It is not yet known whether the seasons will be abandoned  with no promotion or relegation and no champions or base the outcome of the campaign on current standings.

    Defending Ligue 1 champions Paris St Germain were 12 points clear of Marseille with 10 rounds of matches and one outstanding fixture left to play.

    Bordeaux were eight points ahead of Lyon in the Top 14 ith nine rounds left, plus the play-offs.

    it is also unclear what affect the decisoon will have on the postponed 2019/20 pan-European cup competitions in both sports, with French clubs heavily involved.

     

  2. The Eredivisie, the top division of football in the Netherlands, will have with no title winner this season after the governing body, the KNVB, ended the 2019/20 campaign.

    The move comes after the national government banned major events until September because of the Covid-19 outbreak which has so far claimed 4,000 lives in the country.

    Ajax led the table from AZ Alkmaar on goal difference with nine games left but will not be named champions. There will also be no promotion or relegation to and from the second tier.
