Football - Turkish League Title

The championship of Turkey began in 1924 as the Turkish Football Championship (TFC), In 1937 the National Division began and ran alongside the TFC creating two champions until 1950, when the National League ended.
In 1952 professionalism began in Turkish football in Istanbul, and the clubs in that city left the amateur TFC competition and so regional competitions prevailed from 1952 to 1958 until the nationwide Milli Lig came into existence in 1959. In 1963-64, Milli Lig became 1. Lig before adopting its current name, Super Lig, from 2001. The three Istanbul giants - Besiktas, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray - have dominated the Super Lig era.
