1972 Summer Olympic Games

Munich, West Germany
The 17th Games was attended by an unprecedented 122 nations with 7156 competitors (6086 men and 1070 women) also a record. It was the first Olympics to welcome over 1000 female participants. The Soviet Union came top of the medal table for the first time since 1960, and 48 countries won medals.The event was blighted, though, by the murder of 11 of the Israeli delegation after Arab terrorists broke into the Olympic village.
