Football - English League Title
Until the 1992/93 season, the Football League First Division (inaugurated as the Football League in 1888/89 before becoming the First Division in 1892/93) was the highest league in English football. It was the first football club league title contested anywhere in the world.
Season 1992/93 saw the foundation of the Premier League, one of the most significant events in British sport in the latter-half of the 20th century.
With a wealth of television and sponsorship income backing the venture, the English title was ripped away from the auspices of the Football League after 104 years of history. The First Division became the Football League Championship, the second tier of the game in England, from 1992/93 but kept the same trophy with a new prize made for the Premier League era.
