The 16th Winter Olympics was the third to be held in France, matching the achievement of the United States as a three-time host nation. A record 64 nations attended the Games, with the athletes from six former Soviet Union states competing as the Unified Team. Germany competed as a united team for the first time since 1936 and came top of the medal table.
