1956 Winter Olympic Games

Cortina D'Ampezzo, Italy
The seventh Winter Olympics was the first to be held in Italy and the sixth staged in Europe. IIt was the biggest winter Games so far, with 32 nations sending 687 male and 132 female competitors - all records.
It appeared that Norway's long reign as the most powerful winter sports country was coming to an end. A lowly seventh place in the medal table was the first time the Norwegians had finished outside the top two, and just the second time they had failed to come first. The Soviet Union, on debut, claimed the most medals.
