1996 Summer Olympic Games
Atlanta, United States
The 23rd Summer Games were the fourth to be held in the United States, following on from St Louis 1904 and Los Angeles in 1932 and 1984.
A record 197 nations and over 10000 competitors took part. Russia competed as a separate nation for the first time since World War I, while 11 other former Soviet republics made their Olympic debuts as individual entities. The Games were marred by a bomb explosion in the athletes village, which killed a spectator.
