Olympic Games - Judo

Judo first appeared in the Olympics in 1964. It was dropped in 1968, but has been ever present since its return in 1972. Women first competed in 1988 as a demonstration sport, before medals were awarded from 1992 onwards.
Competition is based upon weight. Gold and silver medals are awarded after a knockout tournament in each class. After the semi-finals there is a repechage involving all those knocked out by the finalists. Two players from this progress to meet the losing semi-finalists in contests for the two bronze medals awarded.
