The first Olympic diving events were men's platform diving and a `plunge for distance` event (literally who ccouldd go furthest underwater from a dive from poolside). At the 1908 Games, men's springboard diving replacing the plunge for distance. Women's diving first appeared at the 1912 Olympics and by 1928 both sexes had platform and springboard events.
