Football - Spanish League Title
The championship of Spain, known as La Liga but officially the Primera Division, was initially formed of 10 teams (Barcelona, Real Madrid, Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Arenas Getxo, Real Union, Atlético Madrid, Espanyol, Europa and Racing de Santander) but is now contested by 20 clubs each season. If teams are equal of points at the end of the season, their head-to-head record decides final placings. The bottom three teams are relegated to the Segunda Division, with three promoted from the second tier in their place. The league was not held for three seasons in the late 1930s due to the Spanish Civil War.
