Football - Coppa Italia

The holders of Italy's domestic cup wear La Coccarda, the national symbol, on their shirts. After an initial tournament in 1921/22, the concept was abandoned until 1935/36. It returned for eight years before and during World War II before leaving the scene for 15 years. The creation of UEFA's Cup Winners Cup lead to the competition making a comeback in 1957/58 so that Italy had a qualifying club for that pan-European tournament and it has been staged annually ever since.
