Football - AFC Asian Cup
The Asian Cup was born to dovetail with the Asian Games and produce, effectively, a continental championship every two years. The tournament was beset by political considerations from its foundation in the 1950s right through to the mid-70s, when the two Asian "problem states" of Israel and Taiwan were expelled, after years of key matches being cancelled due to nations refusing to compete against them.
