1972 Winter Olympic Games

Sapporo, Japan
The 11th Winter Olympics was the first to be held in Asia, although Sapporo had been awarded the 1940 Games which had to be cancelled due to World War II. The Soviet Union topped the medals table for the fourth time at a Winter Games, while East Germany were runners-up in just their second entry. A total of 35 nations took part (two fewer than in 1968), with 1015 men and a record 217 female competitors.
