The foundation of the FA Premier League in 1992 was one of the most significant events in British sport in the latter-half of the 20th century. With a wealth of television and sponsorship income backing the venture, the English title was ripped away from under the auspices of Football League after 104 years of history. The Football League Championship was to be from then on contested by the second tier of English clubs.
