Australia sensationally claimed a first southern hemisphere title for 10 years with a dramatc triumph at Suncorp Stadium. Tries from scrum-half Will Genia, No.8 Radike Samo and full-back Kurtley Beale gave the Wallabies victory. cleared the fourth hurdle in their progress towards the target of a first Six Nations Grand Slam in eight years, and retained the Calcutta Cup, after making hard work of seeing off bottom side Scotland. Tom Croft's second half try proved to be the difference, after the oldest rivals in international rugby went in at the break all-square at 9-9. Scotland have not won at Twickenham since 1983.

Italy beat France for the first time in a Six Nations match and just the second time in 32 meetings to finally lay their hands on the Trophee Garibaldi. France led 18-6 with 30 minutes to go but Andrea Masi's converted try and three Mirco Bergamasco penalties sealed the deal at Stadio Flaminio.

A controversial Mike Phillips try was the difference at the Millennium Stadium as Ireland were denied a shot at the Triple Crown. Brian O'Driscoll equalled the 90-year-old Championship record with his 24th try in the tournament but it was the Wales scrum-half who profited from a quick line-out that should not have been allowed, after Wales skipper Matthew Rees threw a different ball to the one that was kicked out.

, Wales returned to form with a comfortable win over a poor Scotland side at Murrayfield, Shane Williams taking his career tournament try tally to 22, two short of Ian Smith's long-standing record. On Sunday, Ireland out-scored the reigning Six Nations champions by three tries to one at the Aviva Stadium but still came off as losers.

Defending champions France began their 2011 season with an impressive victory over Scotland at Stade de France. France scored four tries through man of the match Maxime Medard, a penalty try, Imanol Harinordoquy and Damien Traille but due to the archaic rules of the tournament they don't get a bonus point for their efforts. Scotland recorded three tries of their own by skipper Alastair Kellock, Kelly Brown and Rory Lamont.
Ronan O'Gara's late drop-goal denied Italy their first-ever Six Nations victory over the Irish. After a dull first half at Stadio Flaminio finished with Italy 6-3 up, Brian O'Driscoll's try helped Ireland move 10-6 ahead but Luke McLean's 75th-minute reply regained the lead for the hosts.
Earlier on in the weekend, wing Chris Ashton scored two tries and fly-half Toby Flood was named man of the match as England ended the historic first Friday start to the Six Nations on top against bitter rivals Wales at the Millennium Stadium. England led 23-9 midway through the second half but Morgan Stoddart's try pulled Wales back into it. Substitute Jonny Wilkinson sllotted a late penalty to confirm victory.
